Blame It On Rio: Olympic City Is Airbnb’s Most Expensive Place to Stay

By Jeff Vasishta August 4, 2016

The city of Rio De Janeiro gets gold as Airbnb’s most expensive city and that’s even before the first starting gun at the Olympics has been fired. The Summer Games has pole vaulted Rio ahead of other high earning cities such as Miami and San Francisco in the lodging start up’s winner’s table. In a new Bloomberg index released in August 2016, Rio charges $206 per day on average, twice as much as Paris. Limited hotel accommodation has bottle necked tourists into private homes in the Olympic city. It’s a problem Rio should be used to after hosting the soccer World Cup there two years ago.

At $242 a night, Rio is the world’s seventh most expensive place to stay, according to Bloomberg World Index. Local filmmaker Breno Moreira, who’s lived in Rio all his life said, “If you really want to live in luxury in Rio, you can stay at the Copacabana Palace, right on the beach. Of all the best hotels in Rio, it is the oldest and most traditional.”

Although the majority of athletes’ families are staying with Airbnb, elite athletes with lavish endorsements are able to make other arrangements. No two to a room sharing at the Olympic village for the US men’s and women’s basketball team comprising multi-millionaires from the NBA. The Silver Cloud, a 196 cabin luxury cruise ship, docked at Pier Maua in Rio, has been conformed at the preferred accommodation for USA Basketball.

The ship has been furnished with extra-large beds to suite the 7 foot plus athletes along with a spa, multiple dining area and a pool. The also reported that security has been ramped up for the stay with only one entrance, a fence of bulletproof glass and 250 federal police officers protecting this ship’s precious cargo. A week-long stay upon the Silver Cloud sets well-heeled vacationers back $13,000, but according to multiple reports the USA Basketball team and Olympic sponsor, Cisco are footing the bill. No word if Airbnb also has luxury cruise liners for rent. Chances are they might be a touch more expensive than their average Rio price $206 per night.
